Preventing the Next Pandemic with Dr. Hotez
February’s Plugged In Series speaker, Peter J. Hotez, M.D., Ph.D spoke this week about the development of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, current vaccination efforts and strategies for preventing the next pandemic. He outlined how vaccine virologists and researchers had worked for the past 15 years on understanding the Coronavirus and spike proteins and how a vaccine could be developed using mRNA. Dr. Hotez urged the audience to counter vaccine hesitancy with scientific evidence and fact.
Dr. Hotez is a professor of pediatrics and molecular virology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he is also co-director of the Texas Children’s Center for Vaccine Development and Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics. He is a vaccine scientist who led the development of vaccines to prevent and treat neglected tropical diseases and coronavirus infections. Currently, he is working on a new Texas Children’s COVID19 vaccine now undergoing clinical testing.
