Overview

Instructor Training Course (ITC) is a five-day course that prepares emergency responders to deliver lectures and hands-on training in their local jurisdictions. The course is conducted in two phases: fundamental principles and applied principles. During the fundamental principles phase participants receive an overview of adult learning, task analysis, risk and hazard analysis, learning objectives and lesson plans, communication skills, instructional delivery and multimedia, testing and evaluations, and after action reviews. Then, during the applied principles phase, participants put these lessons into practice through a series of practice training sessions.

NOTE: This course does not qualify the individual as an instructor or trainer in any specific FEMA course.

Below are some, but not all, of the critical skill sets learned during this training program:

  • Demonstrate various teaching and delivery strategies and identify learning resources as applied to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) training environment.
  • Discuss effective communication techniques for an adult-learning audience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage the learning environment effectively, considering the needs of a diverse audience.
  • Develop and deliver a 15-minute oral presentation to an adult audience.
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate a 20-minute oral presentation to an adult audience.
